- He made his debut in Massenet's Manon in Reggio Emilia in 1946 and was immediately invited to Rome to sing in Sonnambula and Rigoletto - the first steps in what was to be one of the most brilliant careers of the century. A tenor in the purest Italian belcanto tradition, his voice was clear, boasted impassioned phrasing and an innate ability in pianissimo singing. He worked his way through the repertoire of the light lyrical tenor and then fully revealed his dramatic qualities. He was Maria Callas' favourite partner, and with her he has left us unforgettable, unrepeatable recordings like Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Puccini's Manon Lescaut and Tosca and Verdi's La Traviata. He has also left us all a living memory of his performances, both live and in the studio, of Donizetti's Elisir d'amore and Lucia di Lammermoor, Cilea's Arlesiana, L'amico Fritz by Mascagni, Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini, Verdi's Rigoletto, Requiem, La Forza del Destino and Un ballo in maschera, to name but a few of the operas in which his identification with his role was absolute.
Giuseppe Di Stefano
Operatic tenor blessed with a voice of unforgettable, golden plangency
Watch Giuseppe Di Stefano and Maria Callas perform a duet from Verdi's Don Carlo
The Sicilian tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano was the most brilliant and sought-after lyric tenor of the 1950s and will long be remembered for the many roles he sang opposite Maria Callas, in both the opera house and the recording studio. Audiences responded immediately to his seductive, openly produced voice, to his natural ebullience and his charismatic stage personality.
